Diving Sites of Oman

Oman is the Arabian peninsula's quietest dive destination. Three areas — the Daymaniyat Islands, Bandar Khairan and the Musandam fjords — offer reliable visibility, healthy reefs and big-fish encounters. The Hallaniyats are remote enough to be liveaboard-only.

Overview

Daymaniyat Islands

Nine-island marine reserve 18 km off Al Sawadi. Closed May 1 to October 31 to protect nesting turtles, with the exception of permitted dive operators September–October. Whale shark season is August–October. All dives require a permit; reputable operators include this in their price.

Bandar Khairan

Sheltered marine reserve east of Muscat, accessible all year. Best beginner and refresher diving in mainland Oman. Sites include Mermaid Cove, Dome Wall and the wreck of Al Munassir, an Omani navy ship sunk as an artificial reef in 2003.

Musandam

The fjord-like khors of Musandam offer the most dramatic topography in Omani diving — sheer walls, big schooling fish (jacks, snapper, occasional whale shark). Trips run from Khasab on the Omani side and Dibba on the UAE side. Currents can be strong.

Frequently asked questions

When is whale shark season in Oman?

August through October at the Daymaniyat Islands, peaking in September. Sightings are common but not guaranteed. The Hallaniyats offer year-round whale shark sightings with much less reliable access.

Do I need a permit to dive the Daymaniyats?

Yes, for any visit including snorkelling. Reputable operators arrange permits as part of their package; expect this to be included in the trip price.

Is the Daymaniyats reserve closed in summer?

The reserve is closed to general visitors from May 1 to October 31 to protect nesting turtles. A small number of dive operators have permits to operate September–October.

Are there dive sites suitable for first-time divers?

Yes — Bandar Khairan and Fahal Island near Muscat have plenty of sheltered shallow sites used for open-water training.
