Hiking Trails of Oman
Oman's Ministry of Heritage and Tourism has waymarked dozens of mountain trails, numbered by area. The best known are the W6 Balcony Walk on Jebel Shams and the W18 village walks on Jebel Akhdar's Saiq Plateau.
Overview
The numbered trail system
Official trails are waymarked with painted yellow, white and red stripes, and many trailheads have a sign with the trail number, distance and estimated time. Numbers begin with a letter for the area (W-trails are in the Western Hajar). Paint marks fade and some trails are poorly maintained, so carry a map or GPS track from a reliable source.
Well-known routes
| Trail | Area | What it is |
|---|---|---|
| W6 (Balcony Walk) | Jebel Shams, from Al Khitaym | Ledge path along the rim of Wadi Ghul to the abandoned village of As Sab. Mostly level, about 3 hours return; sheer drops beside the path. |
| W4 | Jebel Shams | Long, strenuous route towards the summit area; a full day with route-finding. For experienced, well-equipped hikers only. |
| W18b (village walk) | Jebel Akhdar, Saiq Plateau | Path between the terraced villages of Al Ayn, Al Aqr and Ash Shirayjah; about 2 hours one way. W18a and W18 continue towards Wadi Bani Habib. |
| W8, W9, W10 | Bilad Sayt, Misfat al Abriyeen | Linked mountain routes between villages on both sides of the range. |
Water and weather
Carry plenty of water (3 litres or more per person for a half day) — there is little shade and no reliable water on most routes. From May to September hike only in the early morning. In winter the 2,000 m plateaus can be cold, especially at night.
Waypoint downloads (GPX)
These files contain trailhead and access waypoints taken from OpenStreetMap — they are planning aids, not recorded tracks. Do not navigate by them alone.
Practical tips
- Wear boots with good grip; Hajar limestone is sharp and loose.
- Tell someone your route and return time; phone coverage is patchy.
- The road to Jebel Akhdar from Birkat al Mawz has a police checkpoint and is for 4×4 vehicles only.
Locations
Frequently asked questions
What is the best easy hike in Oman?
The W6 Balcony Walk on Jebel Shams: mostly level, waymarked, about 3 hours return, with views into Wadi Ghul. It is not suitable for anyone uneasy with drops, and children need close supervision.
What do Oman's trail numbers like W6 and W18 mean?
They are the official numbers of waymarked trails. The letter refers to the area (W for the Western Hajar) and the number to the route; letters after the number (W18a, W18b) mark variants.
Do I need a guide?
Not for the W6 and the Jebel Akhdar village walks in good conditions. Technical canyons such as Snake Canyon and long routes such as W4 call for an experienced guide.
When is the hiking season in Oman?
October to April. In summer, hike only at first light, carry extra water, and choose high routes.
