Khasab

Capital of the Musandam exclave, separated from mainland Oman by the UAE. Famous for its fjord-like khors, dhow cruises, dolphin sightings and the Jebel Harim mountain road on the rim of the Musandam plateau.

Getting there

Two options. Drive — through the UAE via Ras al-Khaimah and the Tibat border (6 hours from Dubai, 9 hours from Muscat). Fly — Oman Air operates a 1.5-hour propellor flight from Muscat to Khasab Airport (KHS), the only practical alternative. Both routes need a UAE-OM border arrangement; check current visa rules.

Dhow cruises

The signature Musandam experience. Half-day trips from Khasab harbour visit Telegraph Island and Khor Sham, with dolphin spotting on the way out and snorkelling on the way back. Full-day trips reach Khor Najd. Multiple operators along the corniche; prices around 25–35 OMR per person.

Jebel Harim

Drive to the rim of the Musandam plateau via Khor Najd viewpoint and the Sayh plateau. 2,087 m summit; serpentine road that requires a 4×4 for the final 30 km. Bring warm clothes — it can be 15°C cooler than Khasab below.

Khasab Castle

Portuguese-built (early 17th c.), restored as a museum on Musandam culture, dhow trade and the local Shihuh tribe. 500 baisa, Saturday–Thursday 9:00–16:00.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a separate visa for Musandam?

No, it's part of Oman. But if you're driving in via the UAE you'll cross two borders (UAE exit, Oman entry) — visas for both are required for most nationalities.

Is the Khasab dhow cruise just for tourists?

Yes — these are tourist boats, not working dhows. They are still good. Quality varies by operator; the longer Khor Najd trip is more rewarding than the half-day Telegraph Island.

Can I see dolphins in Musandam?

Almost always, on the dhow cruises. Resident pods of common and bottlenose dolphins live in the khors year-round.

Is the Jebel Harim road dangerous?

It's exposed and narrow but well maintained. 4×4 is required for the upper section, especially after rain.
