4×4 Routes of Oman

Oman is one of the best self-drive countries in the region, with mountain tracks, wadis and dunes within a few hours of Muscat. The map shows the classic routes, from the steep road up Jebel Shams to expedition-level trips to the edge of the Empty Quarter.

Overview

Vehicles and tyre pressures

All routes here need a proper high-clearance 4×4 with low-range gearing. On sand, reduce tyre pressures (many drivers go to around 15–20 psi, depending on vehicle and load) and reinflate before returning to tarmac; carry a compressor and a pressure gauge.

Recovery and self-rescue

Carry a shovel, recovery straps and shackles, sand tracks, a jack base board, spare water and food. Travel with at least two vehicles in the dunes and remote areas, and carry satellite communication for the Empty Quarter. Emergency number in Oman: 9999.

Rules and etiquette

Stay on existing tracks, keep off cultivated land and terraces, close gates, and ask before entering private farms. Many rental contracts restrict off-road driving — check the small print before you go.

Frequently asked questions

Can I rent a 4×4 in Oman?

Yes, from international and local agencies in Muscat and Salalah. Check whether off-road driving is covered by the insurance before you book.

Is driving in the Wahiba Sands difficult?

Driving a few kilometres in to a desert camp on the established track is manageable with a 4×4 and lowered tyres. Deep-dune driving and full crossings to the coast need experience and multiple vehicles — many visitors go with a local guide.

Do I need a guide for Wadi Bani Awf?

Not necessarily, but the track is steep, narrow and remote. Go in dry weather, preferably with a second vehicle, and do not attempt it after rain.

Is the Empty Quarter accessible from Oman?

The Omani edge can be reached via Thumrait and Shisr in Dhofar. Treat any trip into the dunes as an expedition, ideally with an experienced local operator.
