Capital of Oman and the country's main entry point — a coastal capital wedged between the Hajar mountains and the Gulf of Oman, made up of three historical districts (Old Muscat, Mutrah, Ruwi) and a long string of modern suburbs.
Where Muscat starts and stops
Muscat governorate runs ~80 km along the coast from Al Seeb in the west to Bandar Khairan in the east. Most visitor sights are in three clusters: Old Muscat (palace, Bait Al Zubair, harbour forts), Mutrah (souq, corniche, Port Sultan Qaboos), and Qurum/Madinat Al Sultan Qaboos (Grand Mosque, Royal Opera House, beaches).
Getting around
Mwasalat runs city buses but they're slow. Otaxi, Marhaba and Careem cover everything; expect to pay 1.5–4 OMR for typical city rides. Renting a car is the easy option for half-day trips out to Bandar Khairan or Yiti.
One day in Muscat
Morning: Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque (08:00–11:00, modest dress, free) → Royal Opera House tour. Lunch in Mutrah. Afternoon: Mutrah Souq (open after 16:00) and a walk along the corniche. Sunset from the Mutrah viewpoint or Old Muscat Sayh Al Malih. Evening: Bait Al Zubair if it's a museum day, otherwise dinner in Shatti al-Qurm.
Half-day trips
Bandar Al Khairan reserve (45 min east) for snorkelling and the wreck of Al Munassir. Yiti Beach for an evening swim. Wadi Al Arbeieen for a wadi day without committing to a 3-hour drive. The Sayh Al Malih sinkhole at Bimmah is 1.5 hours east — combine with Wadi Shab as a long day if you must.
