Beaches of Oman

Oman has a very long coastline on the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea — official Omani figures put it at about 3,165 km including islands. The map shows popular, easy-to-reach beaches from Muscat to Dhofar.

Overview

Beach access

Most beaches are freely accessible, though some areas near palaces, military sites and ports are restricted, and hotel beaches may limit use of their facilities to guests. Wild camping on undeveloped beaches is a common local pastime — keep away from turtle-nesting beaches and fishing villages, and leave no trace.

Best beaches by area

Near Muscat, Qurum is the main city beach, while the coves at Qantab and Yiti are quieter. On the coast road to Sur, Fins has white sand and turquoise water. Al Sawadi on the Batinah coast is the departure point for the Daymaniyat Islands. In Dhofar, Mughsail, west of Salalah, has the Marneef Cave blowholes.

Swimming conditions

The Gulf of Oman coast is generally calm, especially in the cooler months. Along the Arabian Sea coast, and especially in Dhofar during the summer monsoon (khareef), heavy swell and rip currents make swimming dangerous — many beaches are signposted as no-swimming during this season.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the best beach near Muscat?

Qurum is the main city beach; Qantab and Yiti, south-east of the city, are quieter coves. For snorkelling, boat trips to Bandar Al Khairan or the Daymaniyat Islands are best.

Can you camp on the beach in Oman?

Camping on undeveloped beaches is common and generally tolerated. Avoid turtle-nesting beaches (such as around Ras al-Jinz, where access is controlled), private land and fishing harbours, and take everything away with you.

Is it safe to swim in Salalah?

Outside the monsoon season many beaches are fine in calm conditions, but during the khareef (roughly late June to early September) the sea is rough with strong currents and swimming off open beaches is dangerous.

What should I wear on the beach in Oman?

Normal swimwear is fine at hotels and resort beaches. On public beaches near towns and villages, more modest swimwear or a T-shirt and shorts is more appropriate.
