Salalah
Capital of Dhofar and the only city in Oman touched by the southwest monsoon. Salalah is the entry point to the four UNESCO Land of Frankincense sites and a year-round destination for beach and archaeology travellers.
Khareef season
Late June through early September. Daytime drops to 22–25°C with constant fog and drizzle; the desert plain east of Salalah turns green. This is the local high season — Gulf visitors fly in en masse. Beaches are unsafe to swim during khareef. Outside khareef, Salalah is dry and warm year-round.
The frankincense circuit
Al Baleed (medieval port, museum, on the Salalah seafront, 2 OMR) → Sumhuram (3rd c. BC port at Khor Rori, 25 km east, 2 OMR) → Wadi Dawkah (UNESCO grove of wild Boswellia sacra, 1 hour north) → Shisr/Ubar (lost-city site in the desert interior, 2 hours north). All four can be driven in two days.
Mughsail and the western coast
45 minutes west of Salalah. Long beach backed by limestone cliffs and the Marneef Cave blowholes. Continue past Mughsail and the road climbs into the mountains and runs to the Yemeni border at Sarfait — closed to general visitors past Rakhyut.
Practical
Salalah airport (SLL) is 5 km from town with seasonal direct flights from Europe and the Gulf during khareef, year-round flights from Muscat. Most accommodation is along Sultan Qaboos Street and the corniche.
Practical tips
- Best time to visit: October–March for the cool season; outside Dhofar, summer months are very hot.
- Modest dress is appreciated everywhere outside hotel beaches and pools.
- Most monuments are closed Friday morning and reopen at 16:00.

Frequently asked questions
When does khareef start and end?
Late June (around the 21st) to early September (typically the first week). Specific dates vary year to year. The greenest period is mid-July to mid-August.
Is Salalah worth visiting outside khareef?
Yes — the frankincense sites, Al Baleed museum and the beaches are dry-season experiences. Al Mughsail is more dramatic out of khareef when the cliffs aren't in fog.
How far is Salalah from Muscat?
About 1,000 km by road (12-hour drive) or a 1.5-hour flight. The road is the main highway via Nizwa and Duqm; well surfaced but very long.
Can I drive to Yemen from Salalah?
No. The border is closed to general traffic. Visitors can drive as far as Rakhyut on the western coast.
