Nizwa, capital of Ad Dakhiliyah governorate and a former seat of Oman's imams, sits in a large date-palm oasis at the foot of the Western Hajar, about 160 km by road from Muscat. Its round-towered fort and souq are among the most visited sights in the country.
The fort
Nizwa Fort was built in the 1650s under Imam Sultan bin Saif al-Ya'rubi. Its great round tower — about 36 m in diameter and 30 m high — was designed to resist artillery; inside are exhibits on Omani history and fine views over the oasis. Allow 1–2 hours. An entry fee is charged; check current hours locally.
The souq
Next to the fort. Rebuilt in traditional style, it is divided into sections for fruit and vegetables, meat and fish, dates, and crafts such as pottery and silver. On Friday mornings the livestock (goat) market takes place near the souq, from early morning until about 9:00.
Day trips from Nizwa
Bahla Fort (UNESCO) is about 35 km west and Jabrin Castle a little further. To the north-west, Al Hamra, the hanging village of Misfat al Abriyeen and Al Hoota Cave lie on the way to Jebel Shams. Jebel Akhdar's Saiq Plateau is reached from Birkat al Mawz, about 20 km east of Nizwa, on a steep mountain road with a police checkpoint (4×4 only).
Where to stay
Nizwa has a range of hotels and traditional guesthouses in restored houses near the old town. Many travellers spend one or two nights here between Muscat and Jebel Shams or Jebel Akhdar, both of which also have mountain hotels.
Practical tips
Best time to visit: October–March in the north; Dhofar is pleasant most of the year and green during the khareef (roughly late June to early September).
Modest dress (shoulders and knees covered) is expected in towns, souqs and forts; swimwear is for hotel pools and beaches.
Friday is the weekly holiday: many forts, museums and souq shops close or shorten their hours on Friday. Opening times change — check locally before you go.
