About the port

Duqm was a small fishing village before the government chose it for a new port and industrial city; the Special Economic Zone at Duqm was established in 2011. The port is managed by Port of Duqm Company, a 50/50 joint venture between Asyad Group and a consortium led by the port of Antwerp (now Antwerp-Bruges).

Facilities include a commercial terminal for containers, general cargo and bulk, government berths, a large ship-repair yard with dry docks next to the port, and the Duqm refinery (a joint venture of OQ and Kuwait Petroleum International) in the economic zone. The port's location on the open Arabian Sea gives it strategic importance as an alternative to Gulf ports inside the Strait of Hormuz.

Nearby

Duqm town has hotels and is a common overnight stop on the coastal road between Sur and Salalah — see road trips. The rock formations of the Duqm 'rock garden' lie inland from the town.
